Alaska, 1974. Ernt Allbright came home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes the impulsive decision to move his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.

Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future.

In a wild, remote corner of Alaska, the Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the newcomers’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.

But as winter approaches and darkness descends, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own.

While not as good as the Nightingale in my opinion it’s still an incredible book. Takes some time to get into but WOW does she make you fall in love with the characters. Highly recommend

I LOVED this book! I liked the storyline, setting, EVERYTHING. The reason they don’t get the other half of the star is I want MORE, and it was a little slow at the beginning.

Very good book! Reminded me of the Glass Castle written by Jeanette Walls. Where a young girl overcomes her hardships of life, dealings with broken adults who can’t overcome their own crazy. I highly recommend this story.

I hate spoilers, so I will get to the point. This book will hook you. From the moment I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. The main character descriptions and internal struggle they face.. just makes you feel like you are really there with them. Another great book by Kristin Hannah.
  • Being alone is is far more than a state of being

And in this story you see how the main characters relate to Alaska. A land of beauty and filled with contrast. For Ernt it stands for freedom yet it becomes his prison and he tries to t take his family prisoners too. For Cora , Alaska becomes her purpose as she learns skills and starts be accepted by fellow Alaskans. Then for Leni it becomes her home filled with challenges, beauty, love, and a way to escape all the real and imagined monsters that lurk around. The Great Alone is a story of family and how no matter how much you love someone we are basically all alone….

The author could have written half as much and still repeat the story. I was disappointed throughout most of the book and knew the end before I got there. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
