A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters.

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.

They’re polar opposites.

In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She’ll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he’ll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.

  • Not my cup of tea

Pacing was good but I didn’t like the plot nor the inconsistency with the characters. Not my cup of tea but still a nice read
  • So perfect

    The perfect easy read!!
  • Slow Burn

Okay this book ripped my heart out and put it back together. In between that I related so much to these characters. I looooved the banter. Ugh it’s just so good. Yes, I am in fact a hopeless romantic. This novel had me sobbing in the end. (Currently drying my tears as I type this.)
  • So good!

I forgot how to read entire book until Beach Read. It was fun and sexy and just what I needed.
  • I had hope for this but…

So this is what qualifies as good reading anymore? So disappointing that many thought this was “great”. This is bland boring and forgettable. The drama is weak and the main character is way too full of herself. I read a lot of true crime so I needed a palate cleanser. I had heard how good this was so against my better judgement I got it. It started off well and I thought ok this is exactly what I need at this moment but then right when it should’ve ended it continued on for another couple hundred pages and completely became ruined. It’s like the author had a story but it was too short and then had to come up with more pages and ended up just floundering. I did laugh out loud several times which I rarely do when reading so that’s why I gave it more stars than it pry deserved. The bummer is I got the author’s other two books when I got this one and I can’t return them. I don’t have plans to read those so I will pry donate them to the library as I wouldn’t dare recommend them to people I know. The writing just isn’t intelligent, challenging or memorable. You can get an idea about society through the books they read and like and if this book is any indicator then our society is in big trouble.
  • Completely Invested

The beginning was a little slow to start, but the deeper I got, the more completely invested I was to the two main characters - January and Gus. They’ve got the kind of love everyone longs for.
  • Meh

I didn’t love or hate this book. It didn’t draw me in like most books, but I was dedicated to finishing it, as I didn’t want to leave it unfinished. I would give it about a 6/10.
  • another emily henry MASTERPIECE!

    By 34 thunder
i loved the plot beneath the romance, the intricacy of characters and their relationship and i just loved how in touch everything felt with one another. the story builds off of a steady momentum and the moments that make up the coaster are those golden flicks from beloved rom coms. i have loved emily henry since PWMOV and reading this made me love her a little bit more. read this ANYWHERE!
  • Emily Henry’s BEST book.

    By Kate36278
I read this book in literally two days. I could NOT put it down. I felt that this book moved faster than her other novels. I did not think it was a slow burn, which I thought PWMOV was. This is truly a romance novel, but it also encompasses everything love entails; the good and the ugly. If you’re debating on reading, PLEASE DO!
