I first started reading W.E.B Griffin in the early 90’s when bored, and needing something to read, I grabbed one off of a stack of library books my dad had checked out. He was a huge fan of Griffin and felt he represented the military in a super realistic and humorous way. He died in 2001 having retired as a Colonel in the USAF. I return to these books time and again and enjoy them as much as my dad did!

I read this series while I was in the Army and am rereading them now that I can do so on my iPad. Griffin's books can be classified as "fun fiction," and I do not mean that in a derogatory fashion. The books are populated with characters I feel I know based on my 20+ years of service. There are poltroons, political hacks, and people out for themselves and hang the others. But at the same time there are the modest, unrecognized men and women whose force of character and sense of duty and honor rise above the rest. Once I start reading these books, I can't put them down as I find I can feel and understand what the characters are going through.
