I just came across Colleen Hoover last week when I saw “it ends with us” on Instagram. Since then I read five of her books in four days. There is no doubt that she can pull you in and captivate you with her characters and their raw human emotions. “Point of retreat” was the fifth book of hers that I read and let me tell you I was disappointed. Hoover obviously is a talented writer but, her writing from the male perspective is lacking in emotion compared to her female perspective writing. I felt this way about “ugly love” but that was only a partial and this book was entirely male perspective. I did read the whole thing but it was bland and it felt like she was forcing herself to not right from a female perspective and in turn made the male character so boring. She did not hit it out of the park this time.

Possibly better than the first book. Heart warming, well developed and thought out characters make this a must read. You are write there with them all as you cry, laugh, and fall in love. I agree with Jaime McGuire's assessment, the whole read was definitely, "Pure Poetry!"

First of all before reading point of retreat I recommend you to read slammed, i'm because point of retreat makes so much more sense of why certain events happened. And why a character feels the way they do. Point of retreat was my favorite one of all three. It made me cry so many times. I love the drama . Sometimes I feel like I'm in the story. Causes you to react towards certain events in the story. I would definitely recommend you to read all slammed series and I know for sure you would love point of retreat. Colleen Hoover is the best trust me you will not be disappointed. The book is so easy to read and understand nothing too complicated. OMG just read it you will love it. I promise!!!!
  • Suspend belief? OK.

I agree with the spoiler in that I had to suspend all belief about the sex, or lack thereof. It is ridiculous to think that two people totally in love at that age would have this restraint, and I don't think that story line added anything to the book overall. I also agree that the timing of some events are unbelievably coincidental, and predictable - I saw both coming from a mile away. That being said, I loved this book. I thought it was witty and charming and lovely and I laughed out loud a number of times. We suspend belief all of the time in movies and I have no problem doing that for this beautiful story.

Too many tragic things happen to this couple. It was a tease in the end. Seriously. I'm not thrilled. I read this book in a day just to get it over with.

For the reasons I loved Slammed, I was throughly disappointed with Point of Retreat. Was this written by the same author? Where did all the detailed expressions, emotions, the touch, the words she used in Slammed that me feel all that Lake felt. She made Will's POV seem so matter of fact with no intensity. Will writes poetry, but severely lack the ability to describe his emotions with any passion, hunger, lust or severity.
  • All time fav!!!!!

I read both books Slammed & point of Retreat in one day & I can honestly say these are my all time favorite fiction books. Reading both books I cried hysterical, I laughed, & I felt pain for the characters. I wish I had taken longer to read them. These books are a must read !
