Description

Lethal operative Scot Harvath is dispatched to avenge the killing of American citizens abroad in #1 New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author Brad Thor’s new pulse-pounding thriller.

In the war-ravaged borderlands of Ukraine, a Russian mercenary unit has gone rogue. Its members, conscripted from the worst prisons and mental asylums across Russia, are the most criminally violent, psychologically dangerous combatants to ever set foot upon the modern battlefield.

With all attention focused on the frontlines, they have pushed deeper into the interior to wage a campaign of unspeakable barbarity. As they move from village to village, committing horrific war crimes, they meet little resistance as all able-bodied men are off fighting the war.

Simultaneously, a team of Russian soldiers has been dispatched by the Kremlin to loot truckloads of art and priceless cultural treasures hidden away in a host of churches, museums, and private homes.

When multiple American aid workers are killed, America’s top spy, Scot Harvath, is sent in to settle the score. But in a country so vast, will Harvath be able to find the men in question and, more importantly, will he be able to stop them before they can kill again?

  • Another great story. Riveting, fast paced, couldn’t put it down.

I have read every Brad Thor book, and this was not his best. Russia bad, Ukraine good…the West doesn’t do enough. Blah, blah, blah.
  • Timely but somewhat predictable

Love the Scot Harvath series. But a little predictable this time around.

Thor paints the atrocities of war vividly and the result is a gut wrenching story.

I’ve been pretty critical of this series and author because I never feel like the characters grow or are in any kind of serious peril and the trend continues. Harvath goes to Ukraine to take out the most evil Russian mercenaries and of course it’s seemingly no big deal. You never believe his characters are in serious mortal peril. There’s a few side bar storylines that don’t really amount to much (another villain who claims he’s smart but reader can tell this guy is an idiot and he crumples very quickly). I think this series peaked with Backlash the last time the main character felt like he was in true danger and each book since has felt overly formulaic just a change in plot but the characters copied and pasted over from the last book (they all like Nicholas’s dogs, funk music and fine dining, and a morbid sense of humor which the author always assures us is a sign of high intelligence). Spoiler alert: expect more of the same with 2024.

Brad Thor is always great. This one doesn’t disappoint, just isn’t his best. Nevertheless. A very good, fast paced story that’s current.

    Another good one
  • Ok story. Juvenile descriptions of the bad guys

I’m not looking for a high brow experience from a Brad Thor novel. But I’ve read several Scott Harvath books and usually enjoyed them. But this one grated. The bad guys are Russian and they are so bad it almost comical. Juvenile descriptions and over the top evil acts. There was also a lot of political speech making. I agree with the politics and the points being made but I don’t need all that page after page in an action novel. “Dead Fall” was definitely more a miss than a hit for me.

Great book, as it is happening in real time.
